Article in the Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser October 24 1843:
Fatal Accident:- On Tuesday night last as John Chivers, fly driver, of this town, was proceeding homewards from Sevenoaks with Capt. Mrs and Miss West, soon after passing River-hill-gate, the horse, from some unknown cause, began to increase his speed, Chivers endeavoured to check him, but his efforts proving unavailing, the horse ................... when a young man named Batchelor servant to Capt West, who was riding on the box at the time, caught hold of the reins also, and soon after the fly was thrown over with great violence. Poor Chivers never spoke more and was soon a corpse. Batchelor was but slightly hurt; the ladies and Capt West, we are happy to hear, although much alarmed, were not seriously injured. An inquest was holden on Wednesday, at the Upper Cock Inn, when a verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned.

The Late Fatal Accident:
Sir, An unfortunate accident, attended with fatal consequences having happened to a poor man in this place on Tuesday evening last, the particulars of which, or the inquest having been held, will in all probability appear in your paper ,two benevolent ladies who could have been induced by no other motive, than that of rendering their best assistance to the unfortunate widow and her eight small children, at once interested themselves in making a collection to meet the immediate necessities of the afflicted family, and of providing mourning for them. It is needless to say that the appeal was as promptly responded to by almost all who were called upon for their contributions, and one might at least have conceived, that on such an occasion everything like party feeling would effectually have beeen kept in the background, but strange to say these ladies who so generously came forward at the first moment, were met in three or four cases by the answer that "our party" will no doubt be doing something, when I shall have the opportunity of contributing. Having quite accidentally having heard this mentioned, I immediately determined upon declining for the present to contribute at all, until "our party" made its appearance, when I should have an opportunity of expressing my feelings on the subject.
Really Sir, such notions are too pitiful for contempt, it is to me heart sickening, that benevolent persons should be discouraged in their charitable intentions by such paltry and contemptible remarks, applied to the motives or actions of individuals, which are characterized in our most holy religion by the designation of "pure religion and undefiled".
I have made every inquiry since writing the above, from the best sources, but cannot find that "our party" is yet stirring at all, so that at the same time, that I am prevented from expressing to "our party" when on its errand of mercy, my sentiments on the unjustifiableness of mixing up party feeling with the sacred virtue of charity, the refusal to contribute to those acknowledging no party at all, will at least, save those who belong to "our party" their half crowns.
I beg to subscribe myself, Sir, AN ENEMY TO PARTY, where the cause of the widow and fatherless is concerned. Tonbridge 21 October 1843.
