His father's will states that Stephen is left property at Buit? Gardens and an estimated twenty acres near Southborough in the parish of Tonbridge, Kent purchased from E? Jeffery and a legacy of fifty pounds.
Stephen Ashby was born in Lamberhurst in 1777, the son of John and Elizabeth Ashby. When examined by Sevenoaks Petty Sessions on 11th Feb 1815 he said that he had been born in Lamberhurst, Kent, where his father was legally settled. When he was about 18 he left his father and went to work as a journeyman in various places but never hired himself as a yearly servant. About 11 years since he married his late wife Susan, by whom he had four children: James (9), Henry (7), Susan (5), and Thomas (1). On 13th May 1815 Stephen Ashby, now residing in Edenbridge, miller, was again examined. Now he stated that he was born in Lamberhurst, Sussex. When about 19 he was drawn to serve in the West Kent Militia in which he continued 5 years. And then he worked as follows, always as a weekly servant:
