Footnote:-
John Ashby of Penshurst was mentioned in the 1802 Poll Book for Penshurst which means that he was worth over £10. In 1808 he bought the Corn Water Mill (Honours Mill) at Edenbridge from Thomas Driver and by 1815 he had sold it to James Stanford. From 1807 to 1810 Henry Shorey, who later became a miller, was apprenticed to him. In 1809 he took on the office of Constable which was probably a means of establishing himself in Edenbridge, and in 1810 he signed a petition for a new road to Tonbridge, showing that he was regarded as a significant person in Edenbridge. John married Ann.

John married Ann and had three daughters. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, born 1796, married John Friend of Edenbridge in 1814, who became a miller and was responsible for building the windmill that still stands on the road leading south from Edenbridge. (NB Jenny Friend, base daughter of Elizabeth Ashby, was baptized in Edenbridge in 1787). Their middle daughter was Mary, born 1798 and died in 1815 living at Charles Wood's, saddler, in Edenbridge. Their youngest daughter was Lucy, born 1800. [source Lionel Cole]

HISTORY OF HAXTED MILL
The Western half of the double frontage Mill was built about 1580 on the early 14th century foundations, while the Eastern half was added in 1794. Notice the change from hand axed oak to sawn pitch-pine.
The first record appears on the will of Sir Reginald de Cobham dated 1361. Always a corn-mill it ground flour up to 1919 and then, like most other wind and water-mills, was reduced to grinding meal for local farmers until 1945.
Mr. W. Woodrow, the previous owner spent 20 years in restoration and the collection of exhibits before opening the mill as a Watermill Museum in 1969. Recently a complete refurbishment programme has been canied out, including the full restoration of the waterwheel and mill race.
